Psychotherapy in Stroud, Gloucestershire

A little about me

My clinical practice, of over 30 years, (including work with individuals, couples and parents), has been informed by a range of both life and work experiences, of which 14 years were spent at the Tavistock Clinic. I was working as a psychodynamic social worker, and training social work students within a multidisciplinary team in child and family therapy. This unique opportunity enabled me to understand the significance of childhood development and its effect on later life. This has had a profound influence on my therapeutic practice, whether with individuals, couples or groups.

How does psychotherapy work?

The aim of psychotherapy is to get in touch with aspects of ourselves which may be causing us distress and affecting how we function in everyday life. Sometimes this can be manifested in physical as well as psychological symptoms. The Tavistock Centre, which has had a large influence on my practice, is internationally renowned for its innovative psychoanalytic work - with multidisciplinary professionals skilled in the field of training and practice with individuals, families, groups etc. My experience enabled me to learn about unconscious processes, sometime before my actual psychotherapy training. Unlike counselling, it is an invaluable tool to enable the therapist and client to make sense of behaviour which might otherwise seem without foundation. The insight gained from the unconscious may eventually provide relief, greater self-awareness and above to free ones potential and capacity for creativity.
